The investigation by the Syracuse prosecutor’s office for manslaughter

The investigation by the Syracuse prosecutor’s office for manslaughter related to the death of 10-year-old Vincenzo, who died after falling to the bottom of a well in Palazzolo Acreide in the Syracuse area, is, for the moment, against unknown persons. But it is only a matter of time, the prosecutor who has the file in his hands will have to hear all the people, about fifteen, who were at the summer camp, organized by Anfass, a social cooperative for disabled children.

The investigators intend to reconstruct the minutes preceding the tragedy and to do so they will need to hear the version of the operators and the owner of the plot of land in the Falabia district, who, according to what emerges from authoritative investigative sources, is the same one at the head of the cooperative.

The excursion and the tragedy

From the first findings, other indications emerge about what happened in the late morning yesterday: apparently, the excursion to that farm, to show the children how to work some agricultural products, was about to end. The bus that was supposed to take them back already had its engine running and some operator had given instructions to the children to get on board.

Vincenzo would have lingered, he would have been attracted by the swings and that well and he would also have been caught by a volunteer who would have invited him to come down from the covering of the cavity. The child, according to what was reconstructed by the investigators, agreed to that invitation, only to then turn back. Shortly thereafter the tragedy occurred with the child, the son of a couple from Palazzolo Acreide, who ended up in that cavity, about 15 meters deep, half covered in water; the cover would have given way under his weight, as he perhaps jumped over it.

A 54-year-old operator tried to save him but failed in her attempt and instead remained stuck in the intermediate area of the well, between the surface and the water. She was taken to hospital because she was in shock. It is also unclear whether Vincenzo died from drowning or from an injury sustained during the fall. The medical examiner, appointed by the Syracuse prosecutor’s office, to carry out the autopsy will be able to ascertain this.

A witness’ reconstruction

“After falling into the well, the child spoke to his mother and father, they called him and he asked for help.” This is the reconstruction of the moments after the tragedy that occurred in Palazzolo Acreide, made by a witness: Salvatore La Rosa, who lives in a house next to the farm where the boys were on a trip. Speaking to Tgr Sicilia, the man talks about the commitment of the teachers to try to save the 10-year-old boy: “The lady went down with her bare hands, waiting for help” that arrived after “two hours had passed, it could have been avoided”
