Insurance against climate disasters in the fields: i contributions to businesses are decreasing and the system overall doesn’t work. Public contributions for insurance premiums are far from the 70% that had been promised since 2022. The current level fluctuates from 40 to 55% depending on the year. This is the picture that emerged from the congress of the agri-food cooperatives of Legacoop Romagna and Imola held on Tuesday 25 June.

Numerous companies affected by the flood, frost and drought participated in the debate, such as agricultural cooperatives and large companies that export Made in Italy excellence: the agri-food chain in question overall involves 23,200 members and a production of 2 .2 billion euros.

The discussion was summarized in an agenda aimed at the national level of the association, so that it takes action towards the Government and, in particular, towards Minister Lollobrigida.

To stem the situation, the cooperatives also propose that their association structures study an internal mutual fund that can be complementary to the insurance system.

Among the actions to be implemented is also the synergy between the insurance coverage and the Agricat public fund against damage to agricultural production caused by catastrophic weather events (frost and frost, drought, flood), with the aim of broadening the base of companies that adhere to risk management tools and, at the same time, relieving companies of part of the risk.

“The reduction in aid, both for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, occurred after the policies were signed — say the presidents of Legacoop Romagna and Imola, Paolo Lucchi and Carlo Alberto Gollini — heavily aggravating the burdens borne by insured companies and defense consortia that advance the premium of their members; this is leading to a disaffection and a loss of credibility of the entire system, while instead it would be important to spread the culture of protection against risk among companies, facilitating and encouraging not only the stipulation of insurance contracts, but also active defense investments. The Government must intervene immediately to ensure that all the necessary tools and resources are put in place to guarantee the public contribution to 70% of insurance premiums both for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns and for the current one and until the end of the CAP in 2027.”
