The Shopping Market Tomato prices plummet by 30%.

Let’s see the details.

Fruit

As regards fruit, in fact, the production campaigns of the main summer fruits have now begun. Among the most recommended of the week are watermelons, which had a positive start to the campaign, initially with Sicilian production and, subsequently, with products from other production regions. The quality is good and prices are decreasing thanks to the increase in quantities available on the market. Furthermore, the climate, which is not yet excessively hot, has kept the level of demand low, also keeping prices low, around 0.60 euro/kg.

They are also present in the markets, with advantageous prices nectarines which, I respect to peaches, have even lower prices. This trend is mainly due to a lower production of the latter. Prices vary from 1.30 euros/kg for the small size a 2.50 euros/kg for the large size. Also recommended are peaches which, although they show prices higher than 0.20 euros/kg compared to nectarines, they still have regular prices compared to the average for the period.

The Cherries

This year, unlike the previous year, the production of cherries is regular, although the bad weather of the last few weeks has slowed down production without, however, altering its quality. Currently, wholesale prices go from 5.00 to 6.00 euros/kg, depending on the size.

Vegetables

As for vegetables, the productions of this period are particularly convenient, both from southern Italy and from the rest of the country. Prices vary depending on the product, with aubergines at 0.80 euros/kg, hand-picked green beans starting from 3 euros up to 6 euros depending on the size, courgettes at 1.20 euros/kg. Furthermore, tomato prices fell by 30% compared to last year due to a substantial increase in production. In fact, the Sicilian product has been joined by that of other production areas, such as that of Lazio. The increase in supply, however, is not covered by demand which remains low, resulting in prices for cherry tomatoes ranging from 1.50 to 1.80 and for datterini tomatoes around 2.30 euros/kg. Smooth round green tomatoes are also down at around 1.30-1.50 euros/kg.

In the fishing sector, anchovies, caught both in the Adriatic and in the Tyrrhenian Sea, are at the height of the season with prices from 3.50 to 4.00 euros/kg. The presence of pink prawns at affordable prices is very abundant in the markets, from 5.00 to 8.00 euros/kg depending on the size. The baby octopus is also abundant and at good prices, around 6.00 euros/kg, as are the mussels at around 2.60 euros/kg, thanks to the good production that is being recorded this year. Finally, there is a good availability of hake with prices ranging from 6.00 to 8.00 euros/kg for small and medium sizes.
