After delivery, Hmm Ruby will be put into service on PSX, Hmm’s exclusive service for the US West Coast

Seoul – Hanwha Ocean shipyard (ex Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) has named the Hmm Ruby, a 13,000 TEU container ship built for the Hmm company.

Hmm Ruby is the seventh of 12 large ships ordered in 2021 to be delivered. The order is equally split between HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (formerly Hyundai Heavy Industries) and Hanwha Ocean for a total value of $1.57 billion. All 12 container ships are expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, when Hmm’s fleet size will reach 1 million TEUs.

After delivery, Hmm Ruby will be put into service on PSX, Hmm’s exclusive service for the US West Coast. Currently, HMM deploys containerships from 8,600 to 10,000 TEUs on the PSX service but plans to expand the capacity of its fleet through the implementation of larger ships of the 13,000 TEU class.

Currently ships of 10,000 teu and above will represent 80% of the fleet size Hmm: This is the only case in the world.

Last April Hmm announced its intention to further expand its fleet, with the construction of 46 new container ships and 74 bulk carriers, for a total of 120 new buildings by 2030. The South Korean government, HMM’s largest shareholder, plans to invest $5.72 billion in retained earnings for this construction program.

By 2030, Hmm plans to increase the size of the container ship fleet by 84 units and 920,000 teu to 130 units and 1.5 million teu. In the bulk carrier sector, the company plans to expand the fleet from 36 units and 6.3 million dwt to 110 units and 12.28 million dwt.
