An incredible unexpected event has forced NASA to cancel a planned spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). The reason? A mysterious “discomfort in the spacesuit”.

The agency said astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Matthew Dominick were ready for release stop only one hour before the mission starts, which would have been NASA’s 90th on the ISS. Although no further details were disclosed, Reuters reported that shortly before the cancellation, astronaut Mike Barratt had requested a private line to discuss a medical problem.

It is unclear whether this is related to the cancellation of the spacewalk.

Fortunately, it appears that the problem was not serious. NASA has reassured that all crew members on the station are safe and that the spacesuits are functioning as intended. It has not yet been decided whether the spacewalk will be rescheduled.

This episode is not the first case of extravehicular activity interrupted due to problems with the spacesuits. In 2019, NASA’s first all-female spacewalk was postponed when one of the astronauts discovered that her spacesuit didn’t fit properly. Even more worryingly, in 2022, the agency suspended nearly all spacewalks scheduled after that water was found in an astronaut’s helmet just returned from an excursion (which also happened to Luca Parmitano).

This latest incident, while not as dramatic, could reignite the debate over when NASA will finally upgrade its astronauts’ iconic suits.
