«Urgent dialogue in the EU to achieve sustainable fisheries management»

BRUSSELS. «To achieve real sustainable management of European fisheries, a dialogue on the issues contained in the fisheries and oceans package and, in particular, in the action plan on sustainable fishing is urgently needed». This is what the Undersecretary for Agriculture, Luigi D’Eramo, underlined in his speech in the public session of the EU Agrifish Council underway in Luxembourg.

«We continue to believe that the plan adopted by the EU executive in February 2023 should not have a binding nature and fishing should not be identified as solely responsible for the depletion of fish resources when – he states – several factors such as climate change which today we suffer effects due to catastrophic meteorological events as well as the invasion of alien species that continue to affect Italy. The undersecretary added that the communication emphasizes the further efforts that will need to be undertaken and this raises doubts and that the holistic approach is fundamental but must include an assessment of the socio-economic impacts that the sector may suffer if further restrictive measures are applied .

Italy will continue to do its part on the proposal for a European regulation on forest monitoring but the work to reach an agreement in the EU Council will necessarily have to continue because numerous points of the article are still unclear and must be better developed, added the undersecretary. The Italian government recognizes the positive aspect of the proposal put forward by the European Commission in November 2023 which tends to provide all member states with a unified system for monitoring European forests, a very useful tool for territorial and forestry planning policies but also for management of environmental emergencies such as forest fires and parasitic attacks, added the undersecretary, thanking the Belgian presidency of the EU for the work carried out”.
