Yesterday, 23 06 2024, a large fire occurred in Mosorrofa on a hillside located between the towns of Casciaro and Tracale, above the Medha stream, requiring the intervention of the Canadair. The population immediately became alert, shaken as it was by the fire of 23 July last year when the entire town of Mosorrofa and Sala di Mosorrofa were affected.

Just two days before, the Mosorrofa neighborhood committee wrote a letter to the competent authorities with an urgent request for interventions to prevent any future fires.

«We believe it is important to prevent – say the leaders of the committee – in light of what has already happened. Going after the oxen after they have escaped from the stable is useless and counterproductive. Prevention is not only an obligation to safeguard the health of citizens, but it is also convenient from an economic point of view. Unfortunately, the fire season has already started, we once again ask those responsible to speed up the care of the spaces and the relevant tools as much as possible. We also ask all citizens to keep their environments clean, because sometimes it is useless to have a very clean space if the one nearby is full of brushwood and weeds.”

«In this work of reclamation and prevention – they conclude – we once again include the landfills present in the area, produced by the incivility of citizens, but if they are ever reclaimed they will always remain an ecological bomb with which unfortunately for some time now Mosorrofa and Sala di Mosorrofa he has to deal with it.”

The letter sent on June 21st

Request for interventions to verify above-ground hydrants in the Mosorrofa area and cleaning of debris with mowing of roadsides, the former sports field and the Bufano area.

“July 25, 2023 is a date that the inhabitants of Mosorrofa will not easily forget. Already in the morning, the fire had devastated Sala di Mosorrofa and surrounding areas. A strong wind was blowing and the flames spread quickly until they reached the town of Mosorrofa, enveloping it in a grip of fire. The danger of the fire, which put the entire population at risk, reached its peak around 2.00 pm when two buildings in the center caught fire. The citizens of Mosorrofa still wonder how this was possible.

The testimonies collected indicated some very serious shortcomings and failures on the part of administrators at all levels.

During the fire, the lack of water proved to be very serious. This year too, for almost a month, Mosorrofa has had water rationed, a couple of hours a day.

We remember that during that fearful fire i firefighters attached the pumps to the emergency columns but found no water. They went to the aqueduct, located in Sella San Giovanni, and there was no water! This incredible situation caused evident and dangerous delays in the firefighting work of the Fire Brigade, forced to travel to and from the city of Reggio Calabria to stock up on water..”
We are at the end of June, the season of probable fires is approaching and we don’t want to find ourselves unprepared again.
We therefore urgently ask:

  • to verify the real functionality of the hydrants and the constant presence of water.
  • to ensure that the aqueduct tanks never remain empty!
  • the cleaning and mowing of the roadsides (of San Sperato-Mosorrofa, of Mosorrofa-San Salvatore and of Sala di Mosorrofa-Cannavò) which are now real bushes;
  • to properly clean the former sports field and the Bufano area.
