on the way Chills of Summer 2024

XXIII edition of the historic event full of novelties, for a summer of theatre,

music and literature in the evocative natural setting of the most beautiful park in Naples

The inauguration of Maurizio de Giovanni is entrusted to the new ‘creation’ Chills of Summer 2024twenty-third edition of the historic festival, this year dedicated to dreams, organized by Il Pozzo e il Pendolo Teatro di Napoli which, from Saturday 29 June 2024 at 9.00 pm, he will return to animate, with his stories, the fascinating setting of the Royal Botanical Garden of Naples.

Born from an idea by Annamaria Russo, the event, among the longest running in the city, is supported by the sensitivity and precious collaboration of the Federico II University of Naples, which manages the park, and with the patronage of the Municipality of Naples.

For about forty days, until Sunday 4 Augustthe most beautiful park in Naples will be transformed into the most magical theater surrounded by greenery, with a journey into the stories we loved most.

Having become a classic and long-awaited summer event for Neapolitans and beyond, in this edition the event will propose twelve shows (five new shows, stainless classics by Il Pozzo and il Pendolo Teatro, guest companies) and crime dinners, in a range of proposals and an enthusiasm that has continued since the beginning of this consolidated adventure.

«This twenty-third edition – says the artistic director Annamaria Russo – is dedicated to dreams that stink of rhetoric, that make good feelings and are out of fashion. To the dreams that are the sop for imbeciles, to the dreams that are locked in a drawer when the time comes to get serious. It is a manifesto of good feelings, a monument to fairy tales that no one believes anymore. It is an act of faith in recklessness, and if they accuse us of treason against the sacredness of the theater we will declare ourselves guilty. And happy to be.”

The curtain will open on the event on Saturday 29 June The song of the sea by and with Maurizio de Giovanni, flanked by Rosaria De Cicco, Paolo Cresta, Marianita Carfora, Giacinto Piracci, Enzo Grimaldi. The Neapolitan writer narrates again Maruzza Musumeci by Andrea Camilleri, paying homage to the greatest Italian narrator. The rewriting of an extraordinary story in which myth, history and much more intertwine, through a poetic tale as sweet and unpredictable as sea water.

The first weekend of the event will propose, on Sunday 30 June, the second novelty, League by Giuseppe Tomasi da Lampedusa, with Paolo Cresta and Carlo Lomanto, one of the most extraordinary, visionary and erotic stories of twentieth-century Italian literature. The story of a love between a young man and a mermaid, a tale that opens the doors to a supernatural dimension, populated with symbolic and erotic allusions and psychological implications, which make it a poignant meditation on love and death.

Another novelty is scheduled for Thursday 4 July with Nico Ciliberti in Improve by Mattia Torre, a story about our times, about people who build their success on unscrupulousness, cynicism, contempt for others. And on the paradox of the despised, who bow their heads in front of these people and, fascinated, let them pass.

On Friday 5 July the event will continue with the first appointment of The murder mystery dinner, the murder party which, first of all in Italy, the Pozzo e il Pendolo Teatro imported from Great Britain. A game show that will involve the audience from start to finish for three hours, to investigate and unmask a diabolical murderer and discover his motive. Subsequent appointments with The murder mystery dinner are scheduled for Friday 19 July, Friday 26 July and Friday 2 August.

Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July I will be on stage Circe by Madelin Miller, in the adaptation by Annamaria Russo and Rosalba Di Girolamo, with Rosalba Di Girolamo and Lorenzo Sarcinelli, directed by Annamaria Russo. Miller deserves the credit for having captured the thousand nuances of one of the best known and least known characters of classical culture, freeing him from the dark shadows that centuries of misogyny had cast on him.

Thursday 11th and Friday 12th July, it will be the turn of To you, Masaniello dramaturgy and direction by Annamaria Russo, with Alessio Sica, Marianita Carfora, Alfredo Mundo, Riccardo Maio, Gennaro Monti, Debora Sacco, Michele Costantino. He was twenty-seven years old Masaniello, he was a fisherman and sold fish at the market. In ten days he managed to give the Neapolitans a dream. A beautiful, scary dream, so much so that his fellow citizens decided to destroy the dream and the madman who had allowed them to dream it.

It is a brilliant, brilliant, funny and moving theatrical text Smith and Wesson by Alessandro Baricco, news of the event on stage on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July, with Paolo Cresta, Andrea de Rosa, Marianita Carfora. A story of challenges, impossible dreams, courage and regret, in which two men perhaps given up, losers, on the margins, with the desire to refuse or escape from a world they don’t like, find redemption in a young journalist and in the strength of his dreams.

It is an alienating love story, set against the backdrop of the island of Ischia You my by Erri de Luca, with Nico Ciliberti and Giacinto Piracci, directed by Annamaria Russo, on stage Thursday 18 July. The sea, the music, the voices of the fishermen and the more distant ones of a recently ended war “tell” the fresco of a difficult era and age.

A tale of the sea and the life of a sailor on his last voyage Sindbad’s Last Voyage by Erri De Luca, on stage on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July, with Marco Palumbo, Alfredo Mundo, Gennaro Monti, Sonia de Rosa, Michele Costantino, Rita Ingegno, Cristoforo Iorio, adapted and directed by Annamaria Russo.

It will be on stage on Thursday 25 July Moby Dick by Herman Melville, monologue for seven voices around the white whale with Rosalba Di Girolamo (narrative voices), Marco Messina (original soundtrack), Rocco Zaccagnino (accordion), Stefano Cammarota (sound engineer), in the adaptation and direction of Rosalba By Jerome.

There are books about which you already know everything even without having read them, because they are classics. The little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, new to the event on stage on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July with Paolo Cresta and Giulia Cresta, is certainly one of these. A fake fairy tale for children that actually speaks to adults, in the words of the little ones.

Anthology of sins and other miracles The night of magical tales by Gennaro Monti, also an interpreter with Sonia De Rosa, Davide De Rosa, Alfredo Mundo, Carolina Aterrano, on stage Thursday 1 August. Under a magical sky and with the special setting of a unique garden, the deadly sins in popular culture, anger, envy, gluttony, greed, pride, sloth and lust, will mix with handed down stories, fascinated dances and forgotten songs.

To close the event, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 August, will be One hundred years of solitude, a journey through the pages of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s masterpiece ‘guided’ by the words of Paolo Cresta and the live music of Ringe Ringe Raja, in the adaptation by Annamaria Russo and Ciro Sabatino. A musical story, a concert of words for a show that would like to be a secular prayer dedicated to the immensity of literature.

Chills of Summer it is now an eagerly awaited event, which returns voices and suggestions, through theater and literature, in one of the most beautiful and least frequented green spaces in the city. The secret is always the same: doing theatre, in a place other than the theatre, respecting and enhancing the wonderful natural setting.
