Flood in Grisons, three missing and collapsed motorway

Very serious damage, dozens of displaced people and three missing: this is the toll of the flood that hit Mesolcina on Friday evening. Early Friday evening, torrential lava hit several towns in Mesolcina. A photo from the Rescue Media agency shows a huge mudslide in the hamlet of Sorte, in Lostallo. Many cars were overwhelmed by the masses of mud and houses were also damaged. Four people were missing after the disaster. Just before 6 a.m. Saturday, a woman was extricated from the mass of mud. She was taken to Lugano hospital. “It must be considered that three people are missing,” said the Graubünden cantonal police. The search to find them continues.

The bad weather also caused the destruction of a section of the A13 between Cabbiolo and Ara. The Mesolcina valley thus finds itself cut in two. A cold front associated with a high-altitude depression crossed the country on Friday, generating locally violent thunderstorms. South of the Alps there were showers. Up to 125 mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours, the equivalent of rainfall for the entire month of June in the region, according to MeteoNews.
