Another tragic accident occurred at the intersection known as “San Matteo,” located just outside the town of San Severo, towards San Marco in Lamis. Two cars were involved in the accident, one of which overturned, ending up in the adjacent field. The 118 emergency services immediately intervened at the site of the accident, together with the Fire Brigade and the Police, who are currently regulating traffic to guarantee safety and facilitate rescue operations.
The “San Matteo” intersection is sadly famous for being the scene of numerous accidents, despite numerous attempts to improve road safety in the area. Local authorities have repeatedly called for structural interventions, such as the installation of traffic lights or the construction of roundabouts, to reduce the risk of collisions. However, so far, the measures taken have not been sufficient to prevent further tragedies.
At the moment, the conditions of the injured involved in today’s accident are not yet known. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to extract people from the twisted sheets of the cars and provide them with first aid. The 118 operators declared that the priority is to stabilize the injured and transport them as soon as possible to the nearest hospitals, where they can receive the necessary care.
The Police are carrying out investigations to determine the dynamics of the accident. According to initial reconstructions, it could be a failure to give way, but other causes cannot be ruled out, such as excessive speed or a malfunction of the vehicles. Investigators are examining the traces left on the asphalt and listening to any witnesses present at the time of the collision.
