2,085 cases and 14 deaths, infections on the rise

Covid cases on the rise in Italy in the last week according to the weekly bulletin of the Ministry of Health. From 13 to 19 June there were 2,085 new positive cases for Sars-CoV-2, compared to 1,802 in the period 6-12 June. There have been 14 deaths, down from 17 in the previous survey. This is indicated by the weekly update published on the Ministry of Health website. Compared to 77,305 swabs (down from 96,568), the positivity rate grew from 1.9% to 2.7%.

In the Lazio, the region which this week recorded the highest incidence (8 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants against the national incidence of 3.5/100 thousand, as indicated by the monitoring of the Ministry of Health-Higher Institute of Health control room), in the week 13-19 June the new positives were 471 compared to 339 of the period 6-12 June. The region has 1 death, compared to 2 in the previous survey. Lombardy also exceeds 400 weekly cases (433 in the period 13-19 June versus 411 from 6 to 12 June), with 6 deaths (there had been 10 in the previous 7 days).

The Covid transmissibility index (Rt), calculated with data updated to 19 June and based on cases with hospitalization, is equal to 0.99 (as of 11 June, range 0.83-1.16), substantially stable – with a very slightly lower figure – compared to the previous week, when the Rt was 1.07 (0.89-1.27). The picture of the hospitals does not change much either, where as of 19 June the occupancy of beds in the medical area by Covid-positive patients was equal to 1.2% (716 hospitalised), substantially stable compared to the previous week (1, 0% as of June 12th). The occupancy of intensive care beds was also stable, remaining at 0.3% (26 hospitalised), like the previous week. In the last monitored days, no new admissions to intensive care were recorded.

Hospitalization and mortality rates remain higher in the older age groups (80-89 years and over 90). And the weekly incidence rate of Sars-CoV-2 also continues to be higher among those aged 70-79, 80-89 and over 90. The figure is however stable in most age groups. The median age at diagnosis is 63 years, also stable compared to the previous week. However, the percentage of reinfections is slightly increasing and is around 46%, while the previous week it was 44%.
