Fire prevention in Catania: 96 sites at risk under protection

The heat is coming and, unfortunately, so are the fires: for a few days in the municipality of Catania an intervention plan aimed at preventing fires in the areas of the city most at risk has been in place. The initiative, organized by the Municipal Administration, has the objective of protecting public safety by eliminating overgrown vegetation that could fuel the flames. Upon precise indication of the Mayor Enrico Trantino, the municipal Landscape and Urban Green Service, led by Councilor Salvo Tomarchio, has identified 96 critical areas distributed between San Giovanni Galermo, Librino-Villaggio Sant’Agata and Monte Po. Priority was given to the areas adjacent to buildings or parking areas, where the danger to public safety was assessed as higher. The works, entrusted to the company Intercontinentale Servizio Igiene SRL of Messina for an amount of €209,671.62, are proceeding quickly, with particular attention to the Librino area, where some areas had not been subject to similar interventions for years. Coordination is carried out by the Maintenance Department, led by Giovanni Petralia, who has also made municipal vehicles available to support the activities and clean up some critical points in via Fossa della Creta, via Acquicella Porto and other sites. This is the first fire prevention intervention of this scale in Catania. The works, which will continue for approximately twenty days, involve the cutting of all existing vegetation for at least 10 meters in width along the borders of the areas identified as most at risk. The Municipal Administration, engaged in the fight against forest fires, reiterates the importance of collaboration on the part of citizens in reporting any dangerous situations and in respecting the prevention rules.
