The serious episode happened on the night of Monday 17 June. Two nurses on duty in the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari were brutally attacked and threatened with death from the wife of a deceased patient.
Diego Murracino, regional manager of the Nursing Up Sardinia union, loudly denounces yet another episode of violence against healthcare personnel. “During the night shift at the Neurology department – tells – around 11 pm the wife of a patient, after receiving the phone call from the doctor on call informing her of her husband’s death, she entered the hospital room, where her husband’s body was still present as well as three other patients and the two nurses who were victims of a violent attack of blows, tugging and death threats”.
“After about two hours – continues Murracino – after the timely intervention of the police, the woman was removed from the ward while she promised the medical and nursing staff that she would return with a gun. The nurses, visited in the emergency room, in addition to the psychological trauma due to the attack and death threats, reported injuries and physical trauma.”
The Nursing Up union “expresses the utmost solidarity with the colleagues who were victims of unprecedented violence while working to guarantee assistance and care to citizens”. “The incidents of violence – adds the union representative – against healthcare personnel are increasingly frequent throughout the national territory, not excluding Sardinia. These episodes are intolerable, and it is urgent that the Company Managements, the Sardinia Region and the Prefecture do not ignore what is happening but take immediate action to guarantee a safe workplace for healthcare professionals”.
