eight burn victims, hell after midnight

Strong explosion in a factory Bolzano: eight workers were burned. Five of them were in serious condition. It happened during the night in the Aluminum steel plant, precisely in the days in which the topic of deaths at work returned to the center of the debate. After the accident, the trade unions Fim, Fiom and Uilm proclaimed an 8-hour strike at Aluminum and a 4-hour strike for the entire metalworking sector in Alto Adige on Monday 24 June.

The explosion happened shortly after midnight between Thursday 20th and Friday 21st June: suddenly a loud bang shook the neighborhood where the factory is located. It is an industrial area. However, the reasons for the explosion are yet to be ascertained. The workers who were seriously injured were taken by helicopter during the night to specialized centers, including abroad. The Pelikan, Aiut Alpin Dolomites and Trentino Emergenza helicopters transported a worker to Verona, two to Padua, one to Milan and another to Murnau in Bavaria. Three other injured people are hospitalized at the “San Maurizio” hospital in Bolzano.

Meanwhile, investigations are underway to clarify the dynamics of the accident. The Bolzano Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation which will have to determine the causes of the explosion, while the cameras of the plant have already been viewed. Informed of the incident, the president of the autonomous province of Bolzano, Arno Kompatscher, he spoke of a “very serious accident” and asked for “close collaboration from the authorities to reconstruct what happened”.
