Ardea fire, hell in the illegal landfill: “They are making us die”

It’s an environmental disaster. Yet another toxic fire that hits the “land of fires” area between via Valli di Santa Lucia and via Monti di Santa Lucia, in the area of 706 hectares of civic use where a brush fire was recorded near via Monti di Saint Lucia. On Thursday 20 June, a huge illegal landfill full of waste of all kinds, including special ones, burned. A column of black smoke, visible for kilometers, invaded the entire Tor San Lorenzo area, with citizens taking to every corner of the street to call the single emergency number due to the unbreathable air. Once the alarm was raised, the regional civil protection operations room sent two operational units Airone, Noal, Echo and Gamma 13 to the site to extinguish and clean up the area. Also on site was a task force of firefighters from various local and carabinieri detachments.

An unsustainable and potentially explosive situation that does not stop. A real ecological bomb that also involves many nomadic children left to their own devices. A place where crime reigns supreme, where many citizens continually report arson fires which cause a strong acrid smell, with “unbreathable” air, in the two neighboring neighbourhoods, “Marina di Ardea” and “Nuova California”. “The situation is irrecoverable, they are making us die,” declares a resident of Valle di Santa Lucia. «Every day there is an intervention. Complaints and complaints have been filed for years. A few weeks ago we had the visit of the prefect of Rome for important operations aimed at combating degradation and crime, but as you can see the fires do not end. My family alone has reported at least 50 fires in recent years. A real ecological bomb in a beautiful area that could have been a paradise, now transformed into a landfill. A land of fires on the embarrassing coast, where everything is allowed.”

An extremely delicate situation with no end in sight, for which the local police had decided to intervene over the years, implementing the recovery of cannibalised vehicles of furtive origin abandoned on the roadside. But now the situation has degenerated again with many cars thrown into ravines and inaccessible areas. These are both small and large displacement vehicles, mostly stolen, without license plates, looted and set on fire. With them also mountains of special waste of all kinds (Massimiliano Gobbi).
