Water crisis in the province. Protests in Canicattì and Agrigento

In Canicattì, the “city of Italian grapes” in the province of Agrigento,

the barricades were raised. Thirsty citizens poured into the streets, exasperated with the water crisis. Commercial and entrepreneurial activities have thrown in the towel: the shutters are down. The tankers, even the authorized ones, are not circulating and no one answers the phone.

There would be conflicts between regular tankers and those not yet authorized to travel who risk heavy fines in the event of checks during supply. An extraordinary municipal council open to the citizens was held: the mayor Vincenzo Corbo and Aica, the water company of the Agrigento municipalities, were absent. And then the citizens, about 500, protested in the street. An extraordinary session of the city council also took place in Agrigento, attended by around a hundred citizens, together with local administrators, regional deputies and Aica managers.

The regional councilor for public utility services, Roberto Di Mauro from Agrigento, also intervened and announced that a desalination plant would soon be built in Porto Empedocle.

And again the Civil Protection has allocated 6 million euros for Aica, to be spent on works including repairs to the pipelines pending the construction of the new water network expected in 2028.
