injured grandmother with granddaughter. Aster inspection

Collapsed sidewalk in Corso Europa in Genoa Quinto

In Corso Europa in Genoa Quinto, near the intersection with Via Monte Moro, a piece of pavement collapsed this morning, injuring a Genoese grandmother who was accompanying her granddaughter (fortunately she remained unharmed).

In the late morning Aster technicians began to inspect the tunnel under the pavement and cordoned off the area for a linear length of approximately 50 metres.

The tunnel underneath the sidewalk, two meters high, about two kilometers long and characterized by the presence of a 600 mm diameter Ireti tube, reaches up to Nervi and, bracketed on the side walls, holds the ducts for the optical fiber.

The inspections will serve to understand the scope and economic extent of the pavement restoration intervention, for which urgent work is expected to be carried out to speed up its return to public usability as much as possible.

The collapsed tunnel dates back to the construction of Corso Europa in the 1960s.

“Based on the first findings – explained by the Municipality of Genoa – the hypothesis is that the collapse of the pavement could also be due to the microclimate created inside the tunnel where the hot air, in contact with the cold water which flows in the aqueduct pipe, condenses, interfering with the original reinforced concrete surface, equipped with internal metalwork which is damaged by corrosion. The accident is due to the age of the buildings underneath the Corso Europa road”.
