CORE project, third meeting with local stakeholders

The European CORE project (Composting in Rural Environments, composting in rural environments), financed under the Interreg Europe programme, focuses on the exchange of good practices regarding the management of the organic fraction of waste. Last Friday, the third meeting aimed at local stakeholders took place at the headquarters of the Provincial Agency for the Environment and Climate Protection in Bolzano in order to exchange knowledge and experiences learned during the last study visit of 14-16 May 2024 in Mechelen (Flanders, Belgium). The Belgian partners have opened the doors of several of their plants where organic waste is treated.
“The focus of the meeting in Bolzano”, informs Elisa Poznanski, CORE project representative in the Environment Agency, “was to share with local stakeholders what was learned in Belgium during the study visit to some organic waste treatment plants: from neighborhood composting”tCompostje”to green composting plants “Saint Niklas” and “DJ Compost”, with illustration of the technical practices for the certification of compost, at the large biogas plant “DDS-Verko” where in addition to biomethane, quality compost is obtained, right up to the gardens”Comité Jean Pain”, where a closed system has been developed for the recovery of any green waste produced within the garden”.
“For the Province, participation in this transnational project represents an opportunity both to learn and exchange experiences with other realities, and to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of better managing organic waste and avoiding food waste”, says Giulio Angelucci, director of the Waste Management Office of the Provincial Agency for the Environment and Climate Protection, was present. “The results of this transnational collaboration will feed into the drafting of the next provincial waste management plan”.
The next meeting between project partners will take place from 10 to 12 September in Potsdam (Brandenburg, Germany). The focus of the seminar will be the exchange of experiences on particularly innovative strategies for the good use and different uses of compost and products obtained from digestate, in addition to the study visit to the anaerobic digestion plant in Trappenfelde.
