Russia, riot in Rostov prison: six ISIS prisoners killed, hostages unharmed

Six terrorism prisoners, accused of belonging to ISIS, have taken two prison guards hostage at the Rostov pre-trial detention center. According to Tass, they were killed in a raid by Russian forces. Hostages unharmed.

Citing law enforcement, the hostages were an operations officer and an inspector-supervisor. The kidnappers were in the center’s courtyard and were armed with a knife, a rubber truncheon and a fire axe. However, the situation would have been immediately under control, while negotiations to free the hostages were underway. The inmates had asked for a car to leave the center.

According to the authorities, the prisoners were held in different cells, but there was a connection between them and the hostage-taking had been in preparation for several months. An investigation is underway to understand whether the action was coordinated from the outside.

The head of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service for the Rostov region, as well as representatives of law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor’s office are present at the scene of the accident. Traffic has been limited in the streets adjacent to the pre-trial detention center and the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management is asking motorists to choose alternative routes.
