SALVATONIC

We are trying to take stock of the damage in the Salvatonica di Bondeno rectory which houses around thirty people in difficulty and to understand the causes of the fire which, on Monday morning, devastated the first floor and put the ground floor with the kitchen out of use and common areas and unfortunately injured two people. Renata Ranzer, the 86-year-old woman, saved from the flames that were already engulfing her by a young guest who carried her out by placing her on his shoulders and who had been taken by air ambulance to the Bufalini burn center in Cesena, remains hospitalized but since yesterday morning he is out of danger. She will make it. Meanwhile, yesterday morning the public prosecutor Stefano Longhi placed the seals on the seizure of the building damaged by the fire. The causes remain to be clarified, but the most accredited hypothesis seems to be accidental. While the Carabinieri heard the guests being welcomed throughout yesterday, the inspections of the Bologna specialized fire brigade unit began.

A challenging job. The family, father, mother and three minor children, originally from Bangladesh, have for the moment been hosted in a hotel in Bondeno, but their objective and hope, for reasons of the father’s work and the children’s schooling, is to be able be welcomed into the municipality of Ferrara. These are hectic hours for Don Giorgio Lazzarato, who is committed on all fronts to continuing to guarantee hospitality: “We camped out for a bit – he says -. The guest kids are good and are helping me. Then people arrive to give us a hand, to bring food, because we have to eat every day. We have to manage to restore the gas in the temporary kitchen, in the new part that was not touched by the flames, so we can cook again somehow.” The damage from the fire now prevents us from using all the common spaces, from the kitchen to the reception room, as well as the rooms on the first floor. As a community they set tables in a temporary space. Fortunately, around twenty people sleep in the building that overlooks the street, detached from the rectory, which has remained intact, where the availability of water and electricity is fundamental.
