new life at the Golden Mile

On the one hand the acquired waterfront; on the other, a boat intended to clean the waters that wash the coasts of Golden Mile. In the middle the sea, the blue gold on which they decided to bet Portici, Herculaneum and Torre del Greco to relaunch their respective cities through an adequate tourist proposal. Yesterday represented an important moment especially if we take into account that the summer season is knocking on the doors. To the sold out accommodation facilities in the area, we intend to respond with proposals that do not make the presence of tourists simple examples of “hit and run”.

The seaside

At the same time, the new Portici waterfront was opened and, subsequently, the “Miglio d’Oro” boat was launched, a floating laboratory created by the Garbage Group of Ancona, equipped with full electric propulsion, which will carry out its mission from July of cleaning, depollution and monitoring of the coastline that reaches Torre del Greco. The vessel was financed as part of the local development strategy set up by the Golden Mile Coastal Flag for the restoration of biodiversity in aquatic environments.

But while the three municipalities involved (Torre del Greco, Ercolano and Portici) were discussing blue economy at the Anton Dohrn zoological station, a few tens of meters away the mayor Vincenzo Cuomo it opened the promenade created between the sea and the Fs tracks. With him hundreds of citizens, ready to take over the seafront.

«Among my dreams as a boy – commented the mayor – was to one day become mayor of Portici, create a seafront, beautiful beaches, have a clean sea instead of the unwatchable one of the 70s. We are succeeding.” And again: «We don’t stop, we work to complete the redevelopment of the seafront with other equipment. I don’t feel satisfied, but seeing so many people in the seaside park was like realizing that the dream is becoming reality.”

Meanwhile at Anton Dohrn the mayor of Torre del Greco Luigi Mennellathe councilor of Herculaneum Carmela Saulino and the vice president of the city council Melania Capasso they discussed «Recovery and conservation of the sea-coast heritage: the Pelikan system», sharing the theory according to which «the valorisation of the territory and the tourist sector involves the protection of the marine heritage. A synergistic action by our cities, which improves the quality of life of residents and tourists.”

They also spoke Maurizio Minichino and Luca Tortorapresident and director of the Golden Mile Coastal Flag, explaining that the start of the sea cleaning operations is scheduled for July 1st and that the operation will be spread over the body of water of the three cities, with departures from the ports of Torre del Greek and Porticoes.

Technology

TO Paolo Baldoni, CEO of Garbage Group and creator of the system Pelikan the task of explaining how the boat works: from next month the boat will be launched, complete with a blessing, at the port of Granatello will patrol the coast. It will be equipped with drones for surveillance and detectors of waste floating in the sea, with underwater equipment to scan the seabed and geo-reference the waste. Finally, it will have an anti-pollution kit for foams, hydrocarbons, fatty and oily substances on the surface and semi-submerged, which make the vessel “an instrument – the experts explained – which will allow the collection of all kinds of waste at sea, in particular plastic”.
