A car journey of 2000 kilometers in 24 hours and Roberto Salis kept his promise: ‘I’ll take her home’, he said and so he did. He left Monza yesterday and went to pick up her daughter Ilaria who left Budapest to return to Italy after spending almost 500 days in Hungary where she was arrested on 11 February 2023 on charges of assault of far-right militants. Now ‘a nightmare is over’, she said as soon as she got out of the car, while her “very tired and exhausted” daughter immediately went home, after smiling almost amazed at seeing the journalists waiting for her. Together, they took a photo in front of the Monza road sign and now they can think about the party on Monday to celebrate her 40th birthday. “But we have to do two to make up for last year’s”, smiles the father who happily announces the end of his mission: “Now I’m resigning as spokesperson for Ilaria and leaving the scene completely”. Since yesterday, her daughter is a free woman after judge Jozsef Sos granted her immunity without waiting for the official proclamation of her election to the European Parliament, where she arrived thanks to the 176 thousand preferences obtained with the Greens and Left Alliance . Inflexible in the three hearings held so far in a trial that has now been suspended, Judge Sos quickly resolved what was becoming yet another source of controversy between Roberto Salis and the Italian government, settling for an informal list with the elected Italian deputies and thus sending the police to remove the electronic bracelet, taking the Italian activist herself by surprise. Her family had organized a trip to Budapest but to go and celebrate her birthday in her apartment where she had been detained under house arrest since May 23rd. Instead, her plans changed quickly and her parents, always very attentive to safety issues, decided to pick her up in the car and bring her back to Italy. In silence, as always super reserved when there is the slightest risk linked to the safety of her daughter, Roberto Salis then completed his battle which had as its sole and only objective his return to Italy. Waiting for them in Monza, in the apartment not far from the park and the Villa Reale, were the two brothers and their closest friends, the same ones who followed all the hearings in Budapest and who always helped his family to resolve all the bureaucratic and logistical problems he had to face in 16 months spent between Italy and Hungary. But Budapest is the past, of which Ilaria Salis will have positive memories linked only to her family who wrote to the Italian embassy giving her availability to host her even though she didn’t know her and who then welcomed her for 20 days. For the rest, “she had a very intense period of imprisonment and suffered torture – recalls her father – Now she needs to rest, it will take some time. We brought her back here with all the efforts we made” . And now Roberto Salis will also be able to rest.
