Cycling: City of Empoli Grand Prix, Garibbo wins

Empoli, 15 June 2024 – The twenty-five year old Ligurian Nicolò Garibbo (his birthday will be on 29 June) won the 46th City of Empoli Grand Prix at the finish line in via Carraia, a national race for elites and under 23s, organized by Maltinti Lampadari Banca Cambiano with the Sports Committee of the Municipality Cycling Section.

For Garibbo it is the seasonal encore after the success achieved in mid-May in Marcialla in the Matteotti Trophy; Sunday 23rd will be held Italian professional championship in the “Per Semper Alfredo” which will start from Piazzale Michelangelo and end in Sesto Fiorentino.

“I’m in excellent condition to do well in the tricolor too would be like touching the sky with a finger. In this victory – says Garibbo – there is the merit of my teammate Cavallo who made the selection on the Castra climb”.

Here they rose to prominence after a long breakaway of about ten riders, Garibbo, Cavallo, Pierantozzi, Bracalente and Masciarelli, from Abruzzo and son of art. The 5 were no longer approached by a small group of pursuers and nothing has changed even on the San Donato climb between S.Ansano and Vinci inserted this year by the Empoli organizers.

The success of the Ligurian heading to the flagship was clear in the sprint from the former under 23 world champion the Versilian Francesco Chicchi, with Masciarelli and Pierantozzi in the places of honor. 151 runners at the start of which only 39 finished the race which started unofficially from the Coop Center and officially from via Carraia after a minute’s silence to remember Andrea Marinarisporting director of the Gragnano Sporting Club-La Seggiola, suffered a fatal illness while cycling in recent days.

At the awards ceremony Roberto and Cristina Maltinti, the latter with her daughter Viola Santini. For Maltinti Banca Cambiano the performance of Salvadori, Niccoli, Di Felice, Hoeks and Di Camillo who reached the finish line was generous.
