The Greek Basket League is the top-level professional basketball league in Greece. It is operated by HEBA (Greek: ΕΣΑΚΕ), and is currently made up of 13 teams, with the lowest-ranked team relegated to the A2 Basket League and replaced by the winner of that level’s play-offs. It takes place from October to June, with teams playing 22 games each during the regular season and the top 8 teams then competing in the playoffs.

The league first held a playoff round in the 1986–87 season. It also allowed the entry of foreign (non-Greek) players for the first time in the 1988–89 season. The league only became a professional competition in the 1992-93 season. Although the championship has been contested 80 times, only nine different clubs have won it so far. The dominant club was Panathinaikos, who won the championship 39 times; followed by Olympiacos with 14, Aris with 10, AEK with 8, Panellini 6, Iraklis and PAOK 2, Near East and University of Athens 1.
