The caves of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Fascinating, but also disturbing: it’s there a “hidden” Friuli in the depths that not everyone can admire, is the underground world of caves of our region, now also collected in a volume entitled “Prehistoric caves of Friuli Venezia Giulia”.
“In addition to being a quality publication on the cavities of our region and their first anthropic use it is a virtuous example of the excellent collaboration existing in Friuli Venezia Giulia between a large number of subjects, all of them in love with their land and its womb” are the words of the regional councilor for environmental protection Fabio Scoccimarro.
“This project was born and developed thanks to the fruitful cooperation between the Geological Service of the Region, the University of Trieste, the scientific and archaeological museums of Trieste and Udine, the Superintendency of Archaeology, fine arts and landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the groups and speleological associations in our territory, which he brought to the implementation of the regional speleological register with data relating to caves of archaeological and paleontological interest”.
The representative of the regional executive remarked that in 2023, 231 new cavities and 755 cavity upgrades were stacked already known and, in terms of database, 25,177 new data have been inserted. To these numbers must be added further additions, coming from specific ongoing projects with the University of Trieste, the Ogs, the Cnr and the regional speleological federation.
Precisely through the encounter with the rich database of the computerized cadastre raisonné of archaeological caves (Criga) it was possible make a wealth of archaeological data available which have their roots in the work of generations of enthusiasts, explorers and scholars.
