Verani-Furlan in the men’s, Pozzobon gold

Italy’s swimming team demonstrates, if there were still any doubts, its quality by racking up medal after medal in the waters of Belgrade. Dario Verani and Barbara Pozzobon are European champions of the 25 km, after having conquered in the waters ofAda Ciganlija an indisputable record.

A gold that I doubled, a few minutes later thanks to the second medal which repeated an expected but not obvious success on the penultimate day of open water swimming competitions.

Double gold and a surprise at the European Championships in Belgrade

Nothing to be surprised about (really) considering the all-Italian tradition and how much, in open water, the Azzurri still have to conquer starting from the stainless Gregorio Paltrinieri that also a Belgrade he had his say.

The Azzurri are again the best on a continental level. First the success of Veraniwhich resists the pitfalls and attacks of its main rival, that is the Frenchman Reymond and overtakes him in the final km, then the triumph of Pozzobonwho after a poor 2nd place in the 10 km, won the women’s race alone.

Verani’s powerful stroke

An advantage, hers, which amounts to more than 3 minutes over the German Lea Boy who is unable to keep up with the Italian who redeems herself, winning full satisfaction. In the men’s 25 km there are even two Italians on the podium: Matteo Furlan takes the silver from Reymond. Instead they retreat Mario Sanzullo And Veronica Santoni.

An excellent (double) confirmation in view of the Paris Olympics who will see our blues in the pool and in open water.

The men’s 25 km finishing order

  1. Dario VERANI (ITA) 5:08:50.9
  2. Matteo FURLAN (ITA) 5:08:56.6
  3. Axel REYMOND (FRA) 5:09:00.5

The women’s 25 km finishing order

  2. Lea BOY (GER) 5:28:39.6
  3. SANCHEZ LORA candle (ESP) 5:29:15.2

Italy’s medal collection

With this new gold, the most precious medals in total are 3, to which 6 silvers and 5 bronzes must be added. The overall Italian haul grows to reach, considering the three metals, 14 medals overall. Spain is ahead of Italy, while Germany is next in this provisional ranking:

  1. Spain: 4,0,1
  2. Italy: 3,6,5
  3. Germany: 3,3,0
