Secure the crossing of Via Silvestri where on 7 June an 84-year-old woman, who was crossing with her 8-year-old granddaughter, was hit and killed by a car. The League of Municipality XII asked the administration for it. The topic will be the subject of a transparency commission convened for Monday 17 June. We are talking about the pedestrian crossing that crosses Piazza Biagio Pace, at number 220, where other accidents have already occurred. In 2020, an 80-year-old was hit and lost her life.

“There are major safety problems for pedestrians at that point” comments Lega group leader Giovanni Picone. “Unfortunately today we find ourselves having to comment on another serious loss that could have been avoided if the Administration had taken urgent measures. While with the follies of the 30 zones millions of euros are spent to slow down flows on internal roads, we still don’t understand why there is no program of interventions with traffic calming measures on high-traffic streets which have a dramatic history like in via Silvestri”.

The request is to identify tools such as bumps or raised crossings to limit travel speed. An operation that could, however, be more complex than expected. Already in August 2022 the technical management of municipality XII gave a negative opinion to the installation of speed mitigation systems on roads, such as via Silvestri, where the passage of local public transport vehicles is expected.

The opinion of the municipal technicians

The reason? “It is absolutely inappropriate – we read in the opinion – to implement measures to moderate vehicular traffic by means of the devices in question as transit on a raised crossing for passengers standing inside public transport vehicles involves dangerous situations”. The management then cites a circular from the Ministry which talks about the “negative influence they have on the transit of emergency and rescue vehicles”.
