The driver of the lorry involved in the huge accident on Wednesday 13 June evening on the A4 in Stezzano, a short distance from the Bergamo toll booth, is also in serious condition: the man, who suffered serious injuries, was transported to the Spedali Civili of Brescia.
The 58-year-old woman who was traveling in the Mercedes together with three other people also remains in critical condition and is still hospitalized at the Papa Giovanni hospital.
The reconstruction of the accident
The impact occurred at 7.30 pm and, based on initial reconstructions, the car transporter, which was transporting several cars, was the cause of the accident. At the wheel was a Romanian driver who, perhaps due to the poor visibility due to the rain (a strong storm was hitting the area at the time), crashed into the vehicles queuing to exit at the Bergamo toll booth. The Mercedes was the first to be rear-ended, then a collision occurred with the other vehicles, including the lorry and the Volkswagen Polo.
Relief and inconvenience
After the call to 112, a notable deployment of rescuers and law enforcement vehicles arrived on site: seven ambulances, four medical vehicles, the air ambulance, the firefighters of Bergamo, Treviglio and the crane of the Lodi detachment, as well as the Seriate Traffic Police to carry out the necessary investigations. The motorway remained closed for more than two hours, with a two-kilometre queue, to allow the firefighters to make the stretch safe and clear it of the damaged vehicles.
In total, ten people were injured: apart from the 58-year-old and the driver of the van, who were urgently transported under the red code, three were hospitalized under the green code, three under the yellow one in various hospitals, and two were treated on the spot.
