Pizza Mediterranea Cup, Matteo Sanna from Sassari wins the Cabras stage

The smell of guests could be felt from afar. Success in Cabras for the Pizza Mediterranea Cup, the island stage of the world championship dedicated to one of the most famous Italian products in the world. The challenge took place between 35 pizza chefs for six different categories, coming from all over Sardinia: for the occasion, the courtyard of the multipurpose center in via Tharros was transported to an open-air pizzeria.

The best pizza chefs have won the ticket to the World Cup, scheduled for Rome in October.

The event was promoted by the “Ancient rural crafts of Sinis” association, in collaboration with Gal Sinis and the Municipality of Cabras. Matteo Sanna from Sassari, owner of the pizzeria “L’Era della Pizza” in Li Punti, is the overall champion pizza chef of the event.

Matteo Lai instead won in the “Classic Pizza” category, Marcello Melis in the “Pizza in pala” category, Antonio Pellecchia in the “Neapolitan Pizza” category and Paolo Paolillo in the “Innovative Pizza” category.

For the “Gluten-free Pizza” category, first place went to Ivano Giuffrida.

Again: for the Pisarda category, where local ingredients were used, the winner was Rosy Circu from Cabrare, owner of the Dea Madre pizzeria, in the historic center of the town, highly applauded by her loyal customers present at the multipurpose centre. She proposed a pizza based on Sinis melon and Cabras bottarga. For this category, a Sardinian soft wheat flour was used. «I dedicate this victory – said Rosy Circu – to my father Eugenio and to all my staff».

The pizzas will be evaluated by a jury of experts led by the starred chef Mamma Flavia. The creation of the Sardinian stage of the World Pizza Championship had the aim of promoting the gastronomic heritage of the area and its natural and cultural beauties.
