Syracuse, fire at Molo Sant’Antonio in a construction site next to the traffic police headquarters

A violent fire broke out in the early afternoon in the area of the Molo Sant’Antonio, in the Port of Syracuse.

The dark cloud was caused by a fire that broke out just before 3pm inside the abandoned construction site behind the Municipal Police Headquarters, along the Sant’Antonio pier.

According to initial information, what was burning were various plastic materials, waste left inside a container. Two teams of the Syracuse Fire Brigade were on site and, in just over an hour, put out the flames also using foam.

Due to the burning of plastic, the release of dioxin into the atmosphere must be evaluated. The revelations from Arpa, whose headquarters in Syracuse are a stone’s throw from the site of the fire, will provide an exhaustive picture.
The construction site, which has been abandoned for years, has become a “home” for some homeless people and foreigners.

Regarding today’s episode, a statement has arrived from the PD council group which we are publishing in full:

“The summer season, now underway, will bring high temperatures and, with these, probable fires in many
areas of the city. Just today we are reminded of this fact by a further fire that occurred in
early afternoon.

The PD council group asks the administration to know the administrative actions carried out
towards the owner of the land, the commissioner in charge of the composition with creditors
of the company that was to build the tourist port called “Marina di Archimede”. And in
in particular he asks whether the administration has issued orders for cleaning the land and it
waste removal.

It is increasingly urgent to map uncultivated land and constantly check that the ordinances
issued are respected and, if this is not the case, they are followed by the appropriate sanctions and the Municipality
proceeds with the enforcement of damages or exercises the power, which he also has, to clean up uncultivated land and
full of weeds, charging the costs of the intervention to the owners.

Today’s images give us fire but we still have no official news from the
Common knowledge about what is being released into the air and what behavior to adopt. Let’s ask
the Administration to intervene as soon as possible and in the shortest time possible, not only on this
fire and not only on this land, but on all of them.”
