New meeting of activists and inhabitants of Tremestieri, who took to the streets to understand how to move in view of the next technical table
MESSINA – From the meetings with the municipalities to a technical table that should take place at the end of the month, passing through the announcement of the start of the reclamation within the next six months by ESA, the regional agricultural development body, owner of the area. Something is moving around the former Sanderson and that gigantic abandoned area which has been a black hole between Pistunina and Tremestieri for 30 years. The committee that has been fighting for some time to turn the spotlight on the ecological and public health bomb that represents that area and which asks not only for the reclamation but also to listen to the citizens for the subsequent planning, met once again in the square in Tremestieri to update citizenship.
Tornesi: “If today we talk about reclamation it is thanks to the movement”
Ivan Tornesi, member of the Ex Sanderson committee, explained that “we wanted to inform the citizens and inhabitants of Tremestieri of the latest news. We have not yet had an official response but we imagine that the communications given to the press were given officially by ESA. The reclamation project is the one we were informed about: it costs 900 thousand euros and involves the disposal of the roofs, 11 thousand square meters of asbestos roofing, plus a demolition of one of the warehouses in which there should still be oil spills. This is an important step that I believe can be attributed to the movement that has been created around the former Sanderson. If the topic has also been raised in the city and in institutional buildings in recent months, if there will be another meeting at the end of the month, it is also thanks to the movement that has been created and carried forward by the citizens”.
A technical table at the end of the month
The next step is the meeting at the end of June. The members of the Ex Sanderson committee should discuss with the administration in a technical round table with the bodies involved, including ESA. Tornesi explains: “We hope that we can start with the cleanup as soon as possible given the public health problem in the area. Now let’s think about the meeting at the end of the month, which we are trying to arrange to present ourselves with a common position. ESA will also be there and therefore we will have a new comparison. We believe that the intervention expected by the end of the year is not decisive. Those who worked inside the former Sanderson still talk about other critical issues today. We want to ask ESA to learn more about the reclamation project in order to present our observations.”
