Imperia commemorates Giacomo Matteotti 100 years after his death

It took place around 11 am at the Municipality of Imperia a solemn ceremony dedicated to the memory of Giacomo Matteottisymbol of Italian anti-fascism which exactly 100 years ago, the June 10, 1924, was kidnapped and killed by fascist squads, only to be found 2 months later, on August 16th. An event that marked a symbolic point of no return in the dark years of the twenty years of fascism in Italy.

The high officials of the city were present to commemorate the ceremony, with the mayor Claudio Scajola and the prefect Valerio Massimo Romeo who stop under the tombstone, while Eugenio Ripepi interprets the famous speech of May 30, 1924 held by the then secretary of the Unity Socialist Party.

“We wanted to do it in front of the civic building as a point of unity. Under the plaque dedicated to Giacomo Matteotti, which gives its name to the street that connects Porto Maurizio and Oneglia. In a sober ceremony we remember this date which is the most evident of how the fascist regime manifested itself and everything that it brought to Italy, from the deaths, to the concentration camps and the racial laws, the subjection towards Hitler’s Germany and the defeat Of the war”. comments the mayor.

“Today we are here to commemorate a very important event for Imperia. I must say that it makes me smile that the administration has been so benevolent towards history – she comments bitingly Ivan Bracco – when this administration, we know very well, is supported by a very very right-wing party”

In the video the images of the ceremony and the words of Mayor Scajola and minority councilor Ivan Bracco.
