Since Sunday night, as soon as the first data relating to the preferences of the European elections, a derby started. In reality, even in the previous weeks, nothing else had been talked about, but in the last few hours there has been a real flashback: the confrontation between the general Roberto Vannacci and the far-left activist Ilaria Salis. The first candidate with Matteo Salvini’s League, the second with the Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra of the red-green tandem Bonelli-Fratoianni. The first candidate for a common vision, of Europe but not only, the second to spare her from prison in Hungary, where she is accused of beating up two right-wing extremists. In short, a duel between distant worlds, which in terms of preferences saw the military at Carroccio win by a landslide. But talking about merits? There doesn’t seem to be any competition. Unless you’re Bonelli or Fratoianni.
Let’s start from an objective fact: the CV by Vannacci (published by the League, read here) boasts three rich, very rich pages, while that of Salis (published by Avs, read here) is half a page. It may be there, let’s be clear, not only because of the size of the characters, but because of a simple age issue: the general is sixteen years older than the Lombard teacher. But it’s hard not to notice the weight differences. If we put aside the course of study – Vannacci has three degrees and two master’s degrees, Salis has a master’s degree – there is an abyss. The general, with his seven known languages, boasts experience of all kinds at a military level, in the most difficult territories in the world, with delicate and full responsibility tasks. Salis? The experiences as a teacher waiting for a competition, as an educator in centers for problematic adolescents and the sensitivity to the problems of disadvantaged people.

The gap becomes unbridgeable when we read the chapter in Vannacci’s curriculum honors and decorations: every form of commendation, medals and crosses. The most recent? The appointment as Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2019 and the Gold Medal for merit for long military parachuting activity in 2021. Not bad, despite the attacks from the extreme and non-extreme left. An enviable past, yet there are those who focus – often without content, if not instrumentally – on the two books written in the last two years. Let’s move on to Salis… or rather no: we can point out the passion for theater and the interpretations in Monza. Indeed, there is something: political activity in the social centers for “respect for rights and social equality”. Is it worth a medal? The answer is yours.
