Laundrie returned from the trip alone. Repeated incidents of domestic violence occurred along the way.
In September of the same year, the body of Gabby Petito was found, killed by her boyfriend. A few weeks later, Laundrie took his own life. She had confessed to the crime in his diary.
A heartbreaking love letter to her killer
The FBI has now made public a heartbreaking love letter from Gabby Petito to Brian Laundrie, which provides insight into the relationship between the victim and her killer. The letter is part of a 366-page dossier obtained by the New York Post. It contains documents and other evidence collected and photographed by the FBI during a raid on Laundrie’s home in Florida.
Petito would have written the lines shortly before the fateful journey. He couldn’t wait to travel across the country with her boyfriend who later turned into her killer, but he also begged him to stop abusing her.
“‘Brian, you know how much I love you, so (and I write this with love) please stop crying and calling me names because we are a team and I am here with you,’” the New York Post quotes from the document.
«The fact that you are suffering kills me»
In the letter, Petito refers to an argument between the two, without providing further details, and apologizes for being angry “over a stupid piece of paper”.
“Yes, sometimes I’m a child, but it’s because you give me this energy and I love you too much, so much that it hurts,” she continues. “The fact that you are suffering is killing me,” Petito continues, not realizing how prophetic his words were.
She was trying not to be negative and was frustrated that she couldn’t do more. The cause of Laundrie’s pain is unclear in the letter.
Petito also mentioned that, after his return from New York, he would like to work with Laundrie on the van that the couple would then use to travel across the United States: “We can work on the van together and now it’s our dream.”
