The United Nations Human Rights Office said civilian deaths a Gaza during the Israeli operation to free the four hostages captured by Hamas on October 7, and their detention by armed groups in densely populated areas could constitute war crimes.

“Hundreds of Palestinians, many of them civilians, were reportedly killed and injured,” said Jeremy Laurence, spokesman for the United Nations human rights office.

“Furthermore, by holding hostages in such densely populated areas, armed groups are putting the lives of Palestinian civilians, as well as the hostages themselves, at further risk due to hostilities. All these actions, on both sides, may amount to crimes of war”, he commented.

UN shocked by impact on civilians due to hostage release

The UN said it was “deeply shocked by the impact on civilians” of the Israeli military operation in Nuseirat. The United Nations also said it was “deeply distressed” that Palestinian armed groups “still hold numerous hostages”.

In last Saturday’s operation More than 270 Palestinians were killed, including women and children, as well as an Israeli soldier. Around 400 people were injured in the operation.
