Renzi and Calenda risk it, Meloni and Pd do well

European election results 2024 LIVE: once the polls have closed, counting has begun, with the first exit polls showing Giorgia Meloni clearly in the lead and close to obtaining 30% of the votes. The Democratic Party would seem to hold, while Lega and Forza Italia would be below expectations with Allenaza Verdi-Sinistra, Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda hovering on the threshold of 4%. European elections 2024, the new European Parliament

THE general results of the 2024 European elections when counting will begin across the European Union at 11pm. To form a majority in the European Parliament, an alliance between the various groups capable of at least coming together will be needed 361 deputies out of a total of 720.

To better understand the value of the seats obtained, here is an explanation of the groups that make up the European Parliament and the position of the various Italian parties.

  • PPE (centre, conservatives and pro-Europeans): Forza Italia, Svp
  • S&D (socialists, socialists and pro-Europeans): Pd
  • KING (liberals, centrists and pro-Europeans): Action, +Europa, Italia Viva
  • ECR (right, conservatives and eurosceptics): Brothers of Italy
  • I&D (right-wing populists, sovereignists and eurosceptics): Lega
  • greens (environmentalists and regionalists): Green Europe
  • GUE (left, communists and eurosceptics): Italian Left
  • NI (not affiliated): 5 Star Movement

The MEPs elected then gather in political groups organized by political affinities: there are currently seven in the European Parliament, in addition to the Non-Members who can be compared to our Mixed Group.

The European elections are very important because, when the composition of the European Parliament is defined, a majority will be formed within the European Chamber which will first have the delicate task of elect the president of the Commission and the various commissioners, i.e. the actual EU government.

In the last legislature the majority was formed by Popular, Socialists and Liberalsor the triad that has always governed the European Union: at the end of these European elections it is not certain that the alliance will be reconfirmed in Brussels.
