Amelia, in Collicello a tribute to the refugee Piero Calamandrei on Republic Day

The hamlet of Collicello di Amelia paid homage, on Republic Day, to Piero Calamandrei who, to escape the Nazis, after the fall of fascism, took refuge in the small Amerino village until the end of the war. The initiative, organized by the pro loco, with the collaboration of Silvia Calamandrei and with the presence of the institutional representatives of the Municipality of Amelia, saw the participation of numerous people who were given the diary written by Calamandrei himself “Inventario della casa di countryside” where the Italian intellectual also talks about daily life in Collicello, giving a historical, social, cultural and landscape portrait.

In a passage from the diary Calamandrei writes about Collicello: “This, in normal times, could be the ideal place for rest: a few weeks of complete isolation, without books, without work, in this serene cordiality of landscape and family environment (… ) But this, which should be rest, is for me a hiding place and an anguished wait: and all the things and people around are colored with this shade of anxiety, which gives the world a tone like that of a dream or a nightmare. Do you really believe that the history of wars and gallows deserves more consideration than that of clouds and seeds? Kings pass and empires collapse; but the flowers and mushrooms and birds, as if nothing had changed, always return to their time. This story of mine is therefore more comforting than yours: because it tells you that there are laws which do not change with the changing regimes.” The most significant passages from the diary were read by the young artist Leonardo Venturi.
