CATANIA – “The situation is dramatic because there are no additional perspectives or resources. The few available wells are starting to give way, farmers call me every day asking me to bring water for their livestock. After having invested, citrus producers no longer see a drop of water. There are those who risk closing and never reopening”.

The words full of despondency and which smack of a desperate appeal, are of the mayor of Mineo, Giuseppe Mistretta. “In my opinion, Calatino is the front that is in the worst shape at the moment,” he adds.
But even on the side of the Piana di Catania no mass is sung. It’s all dried up.

The meeting

In these hours the mayor of Mineo himself and the president of the Anci, Paolo Amenta, will see the president of the Ars, Gaetano Galvagno, to find an opening to a crisis that risks having worse consequences in the coming days.

The meeting is scheduled at the Ars headquarters in via Etnea. An attempt will be made to outline an overall picture to agree on any moves to be made. The premises are that at the moment there is no state of calamity declared and that the emergency is equal to the urgency of the hypothetical measures to be implemented.

The permanent technical table on agriculture remains standing established in the Calatino area: in addition to the mayors, various trade associations are members. And in this sense, a series of proposals have been put forward which will also be illustrated to President Galvagno this morning.

“Our situation is more serious than that of other parts of Sicily, the data is absolutely clear. Everything was lost. There are those who are also taking steps to slaughter the livestock. In fifteen mayors we have asked that our cry of alarm be heard and the fact that the president of the ARS receives us is already a fact for us. The hope is that it will be accompanied by a turning point”, concludes Mistretta.

Galvagno: “There is no time to waste”

“I have collected what is a cry of desperation from the mayor of Mineo: but it is an appeal that involves many other mayors of Sicily. The situation is complex and dramatic“, explains Gaetano Galvagno.

“Together with the president of the ANCI, I will collect the requests that come out but, certainly, it will not be easy to find immediate solutions – concludes the president of Sala d’Ercole -. For my part, I will listen and try to intervene on the basis of a discussion with President Schifani who is already working hard and the regional institutions aware that there is no time to waste”.
