EU approves German plan to subsidize 10 GW of new gas-fired power capacity

Regulatory authorities of competition EU officials have informally approved a German plan to offer state support for a new 10 gigawatt (GW) of natural gas-fired power generation capacity, which would help stabilize the grid at a time when the world’s largest economy European Union is increasing renewable energiesgovernment and industry sources familiar with the negotiations told Reuters on Friday.

Earlier this year, the German government said it would launch a tender for 10 GW of new natural gas capacity from power plants that could be converted to hydrogen in 2030, as part of plans to ensure a stable supply of electricity with the growth of wind and solar energy production and installations.

The Ministry of Economy declared in February that the German Chancellor Olaf Scholzthe Minister of Economy Robert Habeck and the Minister of Finance Christian Lindner they had agreed on a program under which the federal government would finance new gas-fired power plants with money from the Climate and Transition Fund.

According to sources, the German plan has received informal approval from European competition authorities, while official EU approval under state aid rules is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.

Germanywhich last year closed all its remaining nuclear power plants, is now trying to balance its generation and transmission systems with new gas power plants, which however will have to be ready for operation. converted to hydrogen sometime between 2035 and 2040, the Ministry of Economy said.

Energy policy Germany over the last two years has diverged from that of many developed economies. Europe’s largest economy aims to be carbon neutral by 2045 and to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity production to 80% by 2030, up from the current 50%. about.

While other developed economies – even Japan – are again focusing on nuclear power to increase zero-emission electricity and reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, last year Germany closed all its remaining nuclear power plants.
