Flames smoke hill lido shells two Canadairs stop fire

GALLIPOLI – A sad ritual that is repeated like every year at the beginning of the hot season. More flames and acrid smoke on the hill of Lido Conchiglie, at the highest point overlooking the pine forest of the marina between Gallipoli and Sannicola. And the strong wind blowing in the area extended the first outbreaks, pushing the fire northwards until it touched the Montagna Spaccata area and the Reggia area. Two Canadair aircraft are operating on site and arrived from the Lamezia Terme stations around 4pm.

A new fire that developed in the early hours of the afternoon. Initially it was limited, but due to the force of the wind it then spread like wildfire, affecting a large area above the summer homes.

The fire brigade teams were immediately mobilized on site with various teams from the Lecce provincial command and the Gallipoli detachment, the civil protection volunteers from the hinterland municipalities and the Arif personnel. The area was also reached by local police and law enforcement to monitor the situation.

The two Canadair vehicles from the fire brigade’s air fleet, which arrived from Lamezia Terme, were also called to operate on site and carried out several “launches” to slow down the advance of the flames in the most inaccessible and inaccessible areas from the ground. After an intervention lasting more than two hours, the fire was considered under control. Cleanup operations are now underway.
