A day in court 2024: the murder of Laura Ziliani

BresciaMother’s Day week, early May 2021. Laura Ziliani is a 55 year old woman, former traffic policeman, widow and mother of two daughters: Paola and Silvia. May 7th goes to Temua small village perched in the mountains, where he owns several properties. Her daughters and Mirto Milani, the boyfriend of her eldest, Silvia, are waiting for her in her villa.

The next day, Laura mysteriously disappears and Paola, together with Silvia and Mirto, raise the alarm. The girls claim that their mother, out on an excursion, she should have returned to meet them. The phone rings off the hook, and the search machine starts immediately: Silvia and Paola they make heartfelt appeals on television. Desperate and in tearsask anyone who knows anything to contact the police.

The discovery of Laura’s body and the first suspicions about her daughters

After days of research, approximately a month later one of Laura’s shoes was found in the bed of the Fiumeclo stream. The location of the shoe and the place where it was found suggest to investigators that it was not an accident, nor an extreme gesture.

Some days later, the other shoe reappears, along with some clothing. Silvia and Paola come into the sights of the police and carabinieri, despite their dramatic statements on television.

Very quietly, magistrates and investigators are increasingly suspicious of the daughters and Mirto and, thanks to geolocations, they discover that the trio was in the exact place where the clothes were found of Laura Ziliani, on the same day of her disappearance.

In August the body was finally found and, after the autopsy, it emerges that the woman had been drugged and then suffocated. They shoot like this handcuffs for Silvia, Paola and Mirto, accused of murder and concealment of a corpse.

The love triangle between Silvia, Paola and Mirto and the life sentence

After the arrest the three remained silent and refused to collaborate with the investigators. The investigations reveal that the two sisters were partly manipulated by Mirto Milani. According to the investigators, the man would have a key role in the murder.

In fact, in the previous days, the boy searched online for “how to commit the perfect crime”. And she seems to have told the two sisters on several occasions what to do to throw off the investigation. But there’s more…

Paola and Silvia Zani arrive in court escorted by the police (Ansa).

According to the prosecution, the three had an “illicit” romantic relationship. Myrtle indeed not only had he been Silvia’s boyfriend for years but, in the last period, he also got along with his little sister Paola, who was also without hiding it from his girlfriend.

The motive for the murder? Economicgiven that Laura’s grandmother, mother, has repeatedly reiterated to investigators that the two nieces were very attached to money. But there are also those who hypothesize a sort of “three-way madness”: the trio would have killed and buried Laura on the bank of the Oglio river to gratify their ego (and thus consolidate their perverse bond).

After confessing to the crime only later the discovery of the body, which occurred 3 months after the disappearance, they were sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2023: a sentence to which they will appeal in the next months. Will they stay in prison forever?
