“In Liguria it is an integral part of the social fabric”

Experts compared today at the Sala Cap in Genoa to talk about the mafia and its conflict in Liguria. The debate is on “Liguria, the gateway to Europe in the Mediterranean. Police activities and regional anti-mafia legislation for the prevention and fight against mafia expansion”.

“On the Ligurian territory we have set up a national initiative on the mafia: some try to minimize its presence, it is not a bloody mafia but it is a mafia that has become an integral part of the social fabric. The judiciary must take its course but what is happening in this period proves us right. In 2022 this phenomenon was put at the centre, the arrival of the Pnrr funds had already given an alarm signal regarding the involvement of the economic and institutional fabric”, explains Roberto Traverso, national secretary of Siap, Italian police union, organizer of the debate.

Traverso continues: “The data are worrying, we must continue with monitoring and invest heavily in prevention activities and aim for institutional coordination of the forces in the field. It’s our battle: to pool resources to work in the area. It is one of the Achilles’ heels of the city of Genoa where institutional coordination is struggling to take off. Also due to the cuts suffered by our category. Resources are limited, to make the best use of effective investigative activity, all forces must come together. Control of the territory is also useful for combating mafia infiltration.”
