Serrastretta – A cultural meeting organized by the reading group of the municipal library of Serrastretta “Luis Scalese” in collaboration with the volunteers of the Art and Culture project of the municipality of Serrastretta and the Slow Food Community of Marisa and Mimmo’s house for Terra Madre on the theme: “The woman at the loom”. Stories, secret formulas, beauties and rhythms. Fabrics and textures of life.
As reported in a note received by the editorial staff, scheduled for Saturday 1st June 2024, on Corso Garibaldi in Serrastretta the meeting is preceded by a guided tour of the Museum of peasant and artisan civilization of Serrastretta organized by the volunteers of the Art and Culture project as a moment of knowledge of the exhibition, of the cultural system that revolves around weaving: carding and spinning operations, the loom , display of traditional kit and clothing.
Focal center of the meeting “The woman at the loom” will be the stories of Luigia Iuliano dell’Arsac, director of the experimental demonstration center of Lamezia Terme, will give the speech “Along the thread of Arachne”, and from her books we find the oral testimonies transcribed and belonging to the weaver called “a cannunera”. In this regard it was a work of decoding the numerical sequences, all reworked by re-proposing the fabric samples. This will be followed by an exposition of the experiences of local weavers, recitation of poems and the live weaving of Rossella Fazio’s “Threads and Trames” workshop which appears from her shop window in the small square where the meeting is being held. The organizers highlight how this event aims to be a recognition of the women weavers who pass on their knowledge, an invitation to other women to start weaving again as Luigia already suggests with the annual weaving courses with natural fibers launched and above all a I invite you to reflect on the potential of women to keep life and projects together in a living fabric to protect the entire ecosystem that hosts us and respect mother earth.
The meeting program includes greetings from the municipal administration of Serrastretta followed by the speech by Marisa Gigliotti of the reading group of the Serrastretta municipal library on the theme: The symbolic and social role of the woman weaver.
