Joint press conference of the leaders of the Municipality of Messina and AMAM, yesterday morning at Palazzo Zanca, to provide, first of allthe framework of the current water crisis situation, due to the emergency drought that is being recorded in the national and Sicilian territory, but above all to give an examination of the actions that, in a synergistic way, the two bodies have planned and largely already implemented act.

At the institutional table, with the mayor Federico Basile, accompanied by the councilors Francesco Caminiti and Massimiliano Minutoli and the general director Salvo Puccio, the leaders of AMAM with the president Loredana Bonasera and the members of the Board of Directors Alessandra Franza and Adriano Grassi and the general director Pierfrancesco Donato, who provided data and the state of the art of the decisive actions implemented to deal with an emergency that today is at center for special provisions of the national and regional governments. AMAM and the Municipality of Messina have long planned actions aimed at increasing the efficiency of their resources.

“Precisely thanks to our timely planning – they stated Mayor Basile and President Bonasera – we have proposed projects which are largely under construction, already admitted for financing or present in the plans for eligibility for community funds and which go both in the direction of protecting the water resource and towards the search for new sources of supply. So, faced with the reality that sees a drop in the levels of the main sources that feed the city water network, we will be able to count, for example, on new networks, which no longer disperse water into the ground, new wells that will be able to increase the overall supply, as well as the efficiency improvement of the Torrerossa – Bufardo plant”.

And next to the new wells identified (among which, shortly, those located in the villages of Brig, in the southern area will come into operation), the Municipality and AMAM have also announced the new projects which aim at the reuse of waste water purified by the Mili and San Saba plants and the notice for operators who intend to propose solutions for desalination of marine waters, launched in recent weeks (with a deadline for submitting expressions of interest by next 1st July), so that the water acquired by both can also be used for irrigation or fire prevention or for the benefit of the city’s greenery.

Also reviewed is the status of projects financed and/or ready to start, such as those aimed at completing the ‘new’ Montesanto reservoir (almost completed) and to connect it with the ‘old’ one, and the one aimed at increasing the supply capacity through refunctionalization interventions of the Alcantara aqueduct and the connection to the Montesanto reservoir inside a tunnel, thus allowing a greater contribution when necessary.

The last point shared with the press wasfinally, the presentation of the map of the areas and current water distribution times. The opening times indicated in the table published on the AMAM SpA website in the specific section at the link https://www.amam.it/portale-utenti/orari-distribuzione/ have been updated on Thursday 20 June and refer to the opening times and closure of the tanks serving the indicated areas that will be followed. They may undergo daily variations depending on the temporary availability of the water resource, any faults, technical needs and maintenance interventions.

For this reason, to be able to deal with any individual or localized emergency situation, it was also reiterated on Friday at the press conference that AMAM guarantees citizens an emergency number, active 24 hours a day at the number 090-3687711. As assured by Atresi, the immediate activation of the Municipal Operations Center (COC) remains unchanged, should an intervention of general importance be required, with the support of the entire Civil Protection system to help the population.
