A devastating fire that broke out Saturday night at a children’s hospital resulted in the deaths of at least seven of the 12 newborns housed in the facility. The flames broke out due to the explosion of an oxygen tank. The authorities in New Delhi, Indiareported that the alarm went off around 11.30pm in Vivek Vihar, in the eastern area of the city.

The rescue

The Delhi firefighters promptly responded to the emergency, managing to remove twelve newborns from the burning building, also thanks to the help of those present. Despite heroic efforts by rescuers, six of these children were declared dead at the scene and one later died while undergoing treatment at another hospital. Five newborns remain under intensive care in another medical facility, while authorities work tirelessly to ascertain the causes and responsibility for this catastrophe.

The investigations

A senior police official confirmed that the bodies of the children have been shifted to GTB Hospital for post-mortem. The police have already initiated legal action against Naveen Kichi, the owner of the hospital, to ascertain any negligence that may have contributed to the outbreak of the fire. The prevailing hypothesis, according to the director of the Delhi Fire Brigade, Atul Garg, is that the fire was triggered by an explosion in an oxygen cylinder, which caused the flames to spread rapidly.
