The shocking attack of a fourteen-year-old in Châtillon has shaken the Aosta Valley community and raised serious concerns about the growing distress among young people. In response to this serious episode, the regional councilor for the education system, Jean-Pierre Guichardaz, announced the convening of an urgent safety roundtable to be held on May 29th. Representatives from the world of schools, law enforcement and social policies will participate in the meeting to discuss possible actions to be taken to combat youth violence.

During an immediate response question presented by the Lega Vda group, Guichardaz expressed the need for joint intervention not only on the perpetrator of the act of violence, but on all those involved in the education of young people. “It is necessary to intervene not only on the author of the gesture – stated Guichardaz – but on all the subjects who, in various capacities, have an educational role. Parents, teachers, friends, psychologists, social workers are important figures who must operate in a synergistic prevention perspective, using the school as a privileged place for prevention actions”.

The permanent technical table on legality and intergenerationality in the Region was cited as a key tool to respond to these needs. Guichardaz underlined the importance of developing emotional and relational skills through educational activities that start from nursery school. These activities promote student well-being and self-esteem, enhancing skills such as the ability to self-regulate emotions, setting personal goals, problem solving and relational skills.

The Lega Vda group responded by hoping that the parents of the children involved in the attack will also be invited to the discussion table. “From the comments of young people spread via social media, there is no real awareness of the seriousness of the act committed. Bullying is a reality that the Region must deal with by intervening with real active policies”, declared the group.

This initiative represents an important step towards building a support and prevention network that involves all educational and social figures. The dialogue between schools, families, law enforcement and social workers is essential to create a safe and protective environment for young people, thus preventing episodes of violence and promoting a culture of respect and awareness.

The case of Châtillon is a painful reminder of the need to address youth distress with targeted and collaborative interventions. The hope is that the urgent table on May 29th can lead to concrete and lasting solutions, guaranteeing a safer and more peaceful future for the children of the Aosta Valley.
