Attacks on doctors and nurses in Friuli.

There is an emergency in Friuli Venezia Giulia due to theIncrease in attacks against doctors and nurses: in 2023 they were almost 600, more than one a day. Giving the numbers is Orietta Olivo, general secretary of the CGIL public service: “The cases of physical or verbal violence reported in the region in 2023 – he reported – there were 588, with an increase of more than 20% compared to the 481 cases in 2022 and even a doubling in the Asugi area”.

According to the trade unionist, the increase in incidents also derives from the critical issues of the regional health system: “We do not believe – continued Olivo – that it is a random escalation: the growth of waiting liststhe shortage of primary care doctors and territorial services, the same staff shortages evidently contribute to increase tension among users and stress levels among staff“.

“It is a phenomenon that should not be underestimated: the positive awareness campaigns against violence also implemented at regional level must necessarily be supported, to be effective, also by concrete and targeted actions aimed at resolving critical issues and the issues that are objectively reducing, year after year, the quality and response capacity of our public healthcare”.

“The decline in medical and nursing staff, which is also affected by cases of violence, is the tangible sign of a chronic lack of planning, at national and regional level, and of the lack of a real will to invest in strengthening the workforce – commented Olivo in light of the numbers made known from the Arcs -. If it is true that the reduction concerns exclusively atypical contracts, among employees there is no reversal in the trend and continues, in particular, the exodus of doctors and nurseswhich is not only linked to retirements, but also to resignations”.

“There heaviness of shifts, the structural use of overtime and recalls to dutythe progressive increase in average age of staff, the low level of wages – he concluded – are factors that we have been denouncing for years, without the councilor deciding to open a real discussion with the unions to seek concrete and shared solutions. The demographic dynamics and the reduced contribution of university courses are only a partial alibi”.
