Achieving high safety standards in aviation, promoting research, development, training and psychological support. The IT-APA, the Aviation Psychology Association, deals with this, and a few days ago took part in a meeting at the Mossa Institute in Oristano with the students of the third and fourth classes of the “Transport and logistics” specialization (option “Operation of the aircraft”).

The event is part of the “Look forward” project, a training campaign on the basic elements of CRM (Crew Resource Management) that the association has activated for aeronautical secondary schools throughout the country.

In the Mossa auditorium the students met for four hours with commander Micaela Scialanga, general secretary of IT-APA, and first officer Alessandro Casalone, both airline pilots and aviation psychologists.

Fundamental topics were presented on Crew Resource Management (CRM), non-technical skills (NTS – Non Technical Skills) and stress management, the latter being a strategic topic for any activity carried out in teams in complex environments. In detail, elements of situational awareness, decision-making processes and models, stress management and resilience were covered.

CRM (Crew Resource Management) is a methodology used in civil aviation to improve the management of human, technical and communication resources within flight crews. It is a set of dynamics and protocols that are used by crew members to improve the exchange of information, coordination and management of resources, with the ultimate aim of increasing the safety and efficiency of flight crews.

Since the 1970s, CRM has been developed in aviation as a response to the growing concern about aircraft accidents caused by human limitations and errors or by ineffective management of incidents during flight. Today, all flight personnel employed in commercial flight operations receive constant training and are periodically assessed in order to maintain high standards on CRM elements and non-technical skills.

For this reason, the training meeting represented an important opportunity for the “Mossa” students to approach the world of aeronautical work and acquire new skills. The Oristano institute was the first in Sardinia to join the training campaign of the “Look ahead” project.

IT-APA was founded in 2019 as a non-profit organization and actively operates throughout the national territory to promote the health of aviation professionals and users of aeronautical services.
