The federal states of eastern Germany are calling on the federal and state governments to quickly reform electricity prices so as not to endanger the energy transition in the eastern Laender. “The proposal of the president of the Federal Network Agency (Bnetza) Klaus Mueller to reduce the cost of electricity goes in the right direction. But it must be implemented very quickly,” said the president of the German District Association (DTL), Reinhard Sagerin the newspaper “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”.
“This finally requires political will from Berlin instead of new ideas from the Minister of Economy Robert Habeck to finance the expansion of the network on credit,” Sager continued. Current rules make electricity particularly expensive in the northern and northeastern federal states, as residents and companies must help finance the costs of developing renewable energy through grid tariffs. Bnetza has proposed a nationwide distribution of the burden. Economy Minister Habeck instead proposes “a sort of amortization account”, as he recently declared to the newspaper “Zeit”, to spread the costs over future generations. Swift reform is also important given growing resistance to wind energy in Eastern states, Sager warned.
