Benevento, “Rummo” Cardiology in trouble: doctors “on loan”

The number of retirements is constantly growing Rummo because many medical directors have also used up their “extra time” and are close to turning 70. Meanwhile, the shortage of cardiologists persists and to guarantee the necessary services, the hospital has activated an agreement for a maximum of 400 additional hours per month with the hospital company «Cardarelli” Of Naples, for a total amount of 234,000 euros. But the committed sum is no longer sufficient according to the new fee schedule for specialists which, at the request of the Neapolitan structure, has been updated. Therefore, to the sum of 234,000 euros initially allocated, another 78,000 will be added, for a total of 312,000 euros.

MEASURES

«Rummo» has already announced the new Cardiology competition which is currently in the process of acquiring participants’ applications to join. The requirements required to participate in the competition are proven experience in interventional cardiology for cardiac electrostimulation procedures, clinical electrophysiology, coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary angioplasty. In recent months, the medical staff in the Cardiology and Utic operational unit has been significantly reduced, following the absence of five cardiologists. In detail, two medical managers are taking advantage of the holiday period to be enjoyed before their imminent retirement, two were on leave due to long illness and one had voluntarily resigned in December. The three cardiologists who left will have to be replaced with new doctors coming from the competition, while the situation is different for the other two who are ill. Following the evident shortage of staff and in consideration of the activities carried out by the department, it was necessary to resort to 400 hours of additional services to guarantee shifts in the month of December but the agreement was also renewed for the current year, at least until the workforce can be replenished with the winners of the competition. In fact, Cardiology carries out 24-hour care activities and transversal diagnostic services for the entire company, as well as being included in the time-dependent pathology network of the Campania Region for acute myocardial infarction. Currently, “on paper”, the Cardiology staff is made up of 15 medical managers in addition to the director Marino Scherillo but, in all likelihood, the three specialists no longer in service have not yet been eliminated from the list.

They will be a medical director of Infectious diseases, a maxillofacial surgeon and a dermatologist to retire immediately, while in the next few months at least three other doctors serving in the facility will turn 70. Other specialists, who serve in the emergency departments, have already reached their 68th birthday and it remains to be seen whether they will decide to remain until 2026. In short, what was feared a few years ago by the trade union organizations that had turned the spotlight on the average age of the medical staff of the «Rummo», who entered service in the 1980s and are now on the threshold of retirement, and on the risk of not being able to count on an adequate number of specialists to guarantee the generational change. Currently, the exodus that characterized the first months of 2023 has stopped and “Rummo” has managed to recruit a portion of medical staff who have filled some gaps, as well as young and capable head doctors who are facing the hospital experience with enthusiasm and with the firm will to stay.
